Bar review: The Esquire Tavern

In stark contract to the rest of the River Walk, The Esquire Tavern is the pinnacle of decadence and sophistication. With long solid wooden tables, it feels like a Bavarian beer hall, and yet the decor is more reminiscent of a stately home.

I order a cocktail – ‘Texas is the Reason’. This is the best cocktail I have ever had in the USA. A beautiful blend of corn whiskey, grapefruit, cynar, brimstone and honey.

For starters, we share some devilled eggs, which are spiced to perfection. For the main course I opt for a beef short rib and chimichurri Empanada. Not the huge portions of a classic Southern diner – here we are talking quality and full flavoured food. That said, I did have to help a friend finish her enormous burger, and it was absolutely incredible.

Should you find yourself in this otherwise somewhat tacky neighbourhood, I implore you to pay this fine establishment a visit.
