gin review: Gin Mare

A Mediterranean small batch gin. I have probably had a G&T with this a couple of these in bars before, but I’ve never made one at home.

Despite the intense herb notes, I was glad that I had lemon to hand – I feel that the robust flavour of lime would have spoilt this surprisingly subtle gin. In fact, it was a little too easily drowned by tonic. It seemed as though the thyme and basil flavours smoothed out the juniper and as a result, the flavour wasn’t quite as potent as I was hoping for.

Instead of a G&T, I’d recommend trying this simply stirred with ice and lemon peel. I think it would also be beautiful in a Dry Martini using Noilly Prat laced ice, and a small basil leaf as garnish instead of a twist of lemon.
