bar review: warpigs, copenhagen

Last week whilst on a business trip, I found myself with a few hours spare for a quick stroll. I set off from the hotel on a cold and blustery evening in search, naturally, of beer and food.

Warpigs is located in the Meatpacking District, a hip area of the city located in trendy Vesterbro, with plenty of bars and restaurants drawing a mixed, but on-the-young-side crowd. With huge mash tuns in the window, the display is certainly designed to tempt in craft beer fans. The interior is stark, with long wooden bench style seating creating an informal and social environment. The bar displays a chalk board advertising the range of tap beers available, including plenty of local brews and also some guest ales from international breweries, including London’s very own Beavortown. Many more were available in bottles.

I opted for a local IPA, which was delicious, though rather heavy for dinnertime, at just over 6%. There were other ales I considered but dismissed for being even stronger – it certainly wasn’t the spot for getting  hold of an easy drinking session beer.

The Texan BBQ is next to the bar. It has an open kitchen and you just grab a tray, and order right at the food pass. I opted for a small portion of the beef brisket, coleslaw and fried pickles. The meat was nice but not as good as Bodean’s in London. The coleslaw was fantastically fresh and chunky. The pickles were delicious but a bit too much of a guilty pleasure – there were a lot of them and the batter was rather heavy. I couldn’t finish the whole portion.

All in all, a pretty good spot for a solo drink and dinner. I can see why the range of beverages attracts the after-work drinkers, but I think I’d be inclined to head for more of a sit-down meal experience if I had company – I passed some lovely cosy bistros on the way, and only opted for Warpigs because I’m crap at ‘going for dinner’ when I’m alone.

Copenhagen is notoriously expensive across the board, and so the ‘hipster tax’ is felt more harshly than ever. A meal (better described as a series of snacks) and a small beer set me back around 215 Krone, a little over £20. Perhaps that’ll stop me moaning about Dalston prices for the next few weeks then…
