pub review: wilhelm hoeck, Charlottenburg

No trip to Berlin is complete without a visit to a traditional Kneipe.

Filled with barrels, wooden furniture and glass cabinets containing relics, this charming place was a great place for a schwarzbier and a snack. We went for the minced meat on bread, which was deliciously seasoned, along with pickled eggs.

This is the sort of pub where you’re likely to make new friends. A kindly chap explained to us that the traditional Berlin way to eat pickled eggs is to remove the yolk and mix with vinegar, oil and mustard. Naturally, we had to stay for another drink to learn to do it like a local.
