Beer review: Magisch Dunkel, Ganter brewery
Well when in Germany…
Last week’s border hopping in the Basel area took me to Freiburg, a charming town near the black forest. The Ganter brewery founded in 1865 is based here, and I sampled one of their beers during a predictably meaty lunch with a great view of the Munster.
This was a dark and dry bitter made with both light and dark malts. As well as an intense marmite-like back of palate kick, there was also a sweetness that made this easy to drink, though rich enough to savour. Which probably explains while I was still nursing my glass long after my 91 year old nan had polished off the refreshing pilsner. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
