Ale review – Dry hopped black ipa, Oxymoron Brewery
My first trip in a long while to the Leather Lane Craft Beer Co pub and once again I was overwhelmed by choice. Since I was at the end of a long day of decision making I wasn’t in the mood to contemplate for too long – I chose this because I haven’t had a black IPA in a while. Ok, and maybe partly because it’s from Wales.
I can’t actually decide whether I liked this or not. It had a coffee scent and a richness which made it seem more like porter than IPA, so not what I expected from the name. Having said that, it was fairly refreshing, if a little too tangy and sour to go for big gulps – reminded me of the super-sour Belgian beers, though slightly more drinkable.
The oddest thing was the almost powdery consistency of this. That paired with the bitterness makes me think this would be more of an autumn drink, and one that probably isn’t enough to my taste to have again. Still, variety is the spice of life and all that.
Come to think of it, that’s what it needed more of. Spice.
