Pub review: The Cock Tavern, E8

The Cock Tavern is a charming east end boozer come good. Wooden benches line the small bar and worn tables and mismatched stools are strewn around the bare floorboards.

There’s one thing here that’s certainly well organized though. The beer. Keg and cask options are arranged in neat rows across the spacious bar top. There’s a good variety to choose from, including something for the stout, porter and even cider drinkers in your group.

This place is the brewery tap for Howling Hops, a microbrewery that as far as I’m concerned is at the top of its game and a major challenger to the bigger players on the London scene.

The barman explained to me the difference in the hops used to make two cask ales on the bar, and I tasted both before choosing. But to be honest, I’m yet to have a beer I don’t like from Howling Hops, so next time I might just have half of everything.
