Spirit review: Unicum

This is a herbal liqueur that I tried for the first time in Budapest at the weekend. Regarded as one of the national drinks of Hungary, it is produced by Zwack and aged in oak casks. Apparently it can be drank both as a digestif and an aperitif. I think the former works far better – it’s an incredibly strong taste, and I was quite surprised to see some locals tucking into an extra large shot-style glass of the stuff before a meal with wine.

Overall verdict: don’t be put off by the name; it’s fair to say you’ll love it or hate it, but swallowing a little is worth a try. What’s the worst that can happen?
